the shellcollection

At the end of 1999, I followed  philosophy courses at the VU in Amsterdam. During a college about Hegel I was drawing spirals. From there it was a small step towards shells in all their forms. This resulted in 44 paintings and prints inspired by shells.

In a bay I found shells and snailhouses broken by the stones, the flow and worn out by the sand. The exogenous skeleton, the abandoned house, the empty sleeve that remains. The blank inside is shown, the glass-glazed inside. There is nothing left of the original residents. Not how they were living their weeks by slipping through the cavities and spirals, not how they lay in their small bowl and filtered the water in search for food.
